Permanently installed tuning modules
On the other hand, permanently installed tuning modules are usually invisible from the outside, as they either disappear under the plastic covers of the engine or in the frame tubes. Especially these modules differ significantly in functionality as well as during installation. Some modules are even supplied as a kit in individual parts and must first be soldered together. Also, there are so-called "dongles" in which only the wiring and a socket are firmly installed. The actual tuning is then simply plugged. If you decide on a permanently installed tuning, it is worthwhile to compare the technical characteristics. Especially many customers are familiar with us, who already bought several modules from us, because they either were not satisfied with the operation or functionality or were overwhelmed with the installation. But since we produce and distribute modules ourselves, we will not provide any comparison tables here.
There are some simple tuning modules for permanent installation on the market, which only change the wheel speed sensor signal and therefore essentially have a similar functionality as the plug-on modules. Of course, these modules are then invisible after installation. Such modules are usually already recognizable by looking at the product image. These modules usually have only two connectors. One of them is connected to the wheel speed sensor during installation and the other is connected to the corresponding input of the engine control unit. Due to the principle, these modules have the disadvantage that no correct values can be shown in the display.

These then have 4 connectors, because on the one hand, as in the aforementioned embodiments, the sensor signal is adapted to the engine control, but at the same time also the data communication from the engine to the display. These modules have then implemented routines similar to a cycling computer and measure themselves speed, distance traveled, maximum speed, etc. By exchanging individual data packets sent from the motor control to the display, it is possible that these values are displayed correctly. All FLAVIAspeed modules adapt the data to the display, so that largely correct values are displayed here. In some cases, however, an adjustment of the values is not possible, since these are calculated by the display itself. Therefore, you should think about what is important to you here before you buy and compare the modules with regard to these values.
The data traffic between engine control and display, however, again contains information that is used by the tuning module. Thereby, e.g. the keystrokes on the control unit are evaluated. This makes it possible that settings of the tuning box are made via these buttons and at the same time the associated setting values are shown on the display. Also, the switching on and off of the tuning module is realized. For all FLAVIApeed modules, the speed limit can be set via the operating unit and the module can be switched on and off. The Yamaha tuning modules also the wheel circumference. This is also an essential difference to other modules that either do not allow any settings or that use a USB or Bluetooth connection to the tuning module and therefore a smartphone or notebook and an app for the settings is needed.
The km / h-precise adjustment of the down regulation with the FLAVIAspeed modules ensures that you can raise the limit only slightly, for example to 32km / h. Due to the pre-existing, only postponed Abregelung you can still dose your own performance on speed limit and more sporty, so drive with more in-house performance without having to constantly change the levels of support. You will be rewarded with a higher range. Since the adjustment is done via the control buttons on the bike you can make the limit easily on the go, because you do not need a smartphone or notebook here.
From our own experience and from many forum posts we know how annoying for many is the sudden reduction of the drive motor at 25km / h. This behavior is also referred to as a "wall effect" because it feels like you suddenly hit a wall. Many wish that the e-bike supports even above 25km / h with low power to get a normal to a normal wheel driving feeling.
In addition to the suspension of the motor support, the noticeable pedaling resistance of some drive units is also perceived as disturbing. All FLAVIAspeed modules therefore have a switchable dynamic mode that significantly reduces this effect. This becomes particularly noticeable in the higher levels of support. Especially since the effect is particularly pronounced, since the speed limit, the previously high support suddenly breaks away.
To understand how this works, you have to know that the support actually does not stop so suddenly from a certain speed but over a band of 2-3km / h a limitation takes place. If, for example, the support at 27km / h is completely stopped on a bike, power is limited as early as 24-25km / h. However, this narrow band of 2-3km / h is still very disturbing.
If you increase this volume to twice the range, the support at the limit will be significantly smoother and the wall effect will be reduced. This is exactly what is achieved by the dynamic mode of the FLAVIAspeed modules. This mode can be activated independently of the set deceleration speed. So it is also possible that with support only from 32km / h is slowly reduced.
